PRESIDENT’S REPORT ON OPINION SURVEY

PRESIDENT SE VERSLAG OOR OPINIE OPNAME

SAGESPresidentAlecDixsonOctober 2018

Dear SAGES friends

Over the years there have been mutterings by members regarding a number of issues, namely, where our women members should be playing in competitions, the competitions themselves and the age old debate about the dress code. The report of the ad hoc committee that was tasked to investigate the format of the national tournament was tabled at the past AGM and it was decided that additional cost cutting measures should be pursued.

It was thus decided to obtain members’ opinions by means of a questionnaire which was distributed a few months ago with the request that each member have the opportunity to respond. These responses have since been analysed and the results appear in the annexure. It is noted that more than 10% of the total membership responded which may not seem a lot, but statistically it is an acceptable representative sample of general opinion.

The survey dealt separately with the 8 particular aspects which are listed and discussed below:

1. Eurika Gowans trophy/women’s’ division;

Three issues were addressed regarding the woman members’ participation and the results clearly indicate a need for woman to have the option to participate in the division of their own choosing. Only 28% of respondents preferred limiting woman to their own division, but most (55%) disagreed. There was strong agreement that the current handicap system has levelled the playing field to accommodate competition with men.

2. Divisions in general;

Traditionally, not only in SAGES, but golf clubs in general, it has been the case that the crowning of a National/Club champion has been decided through a Medal competition which effectively ruled out participation by golfers other than those in the A division/low handicap rankings. As far as SAGES is concerned there is an overwhelming opinion that this is not the will of our members. The majority of respondents did not agree that our championship competitions should be limited to low handicap players, that low handicap players should receive preferential treatment and that IPS competitions disadvantage low handicap golfers. Some 94% of respondents agree that every player should have the opportunity to participate in these competitions.

3. National tournament – Flag raising;

There was a normal opposing reaction regarding support or otherwise for this event with a strong no opinion response. Although the event may be critical to some, it is clearly not so for everyone, but there is a strong indication that the event is not well attended.

4. National tournament – Dress code (players);

There is clear support for the current players’ dress code and further discussion is superfluous.

5. National tournament – Dress code (events);

There is stronger support for the current dress code, but there is also significant opposition. Most respondents confirm that the projection of a unified image is important, but there are mixed feelings about the way in which this can be achieved. It is important to note that more respondents agree that there are tournament participants who do not attend events because of the dress code and a significant percentage of no opinions – perhaps by respondents who do not regularly attend national tournaments.

6. National tournament – Tuesday prize-giving;

The majority of respondents appear satisfied with the retention of this event.

7. National tournament – AGM

There was a normal opposing reaction regarding support or otherwise for catering at this event with a strong no opinion response.

8. National tournament – Gala dinner;

There is a strong indication that the event is important and that the cost is generally acceptable, but almost 30% of respondents indicated that it was too costly. There was a strong no opinion faction.

The possibility of a revised format for the national tournament has been raised a number of times in the past few years, hence the decision for the convening of an ad hoc committee the results of which have provided the basis for further progress. There is undoubtedly a need for change and the indications by our members through the medium of a questionnaire have confirmed this – the high percentage opinions on some key factors also reflect the necessity to react sooner rather than later. Analysis of the handicap distribution of our membership at the last National tournament revealed that only 10% of the members qualified for participation in the A division, i.e. 90% of members are excluded from ever winning the championship spot. In the true spirit of SAGES our aim is primarily to organise activities for the benefit of our members and while we may not satisfy every member all the time, it should certainly be our aim to be influenced by the majority’s opinions.

In view of all the above, the NMC have decided that the winner of the National Championship be decided based on the result of an IPS competition and that our woman members be allowed to decide in which category they wish to participate. This only applies to the individual component of the tournament and does not affect the team competition. The individual competition is then divided into three divisions, namely, general, veterans and women. All groups play an IPS format and the national champion is determined by the highest score overall. This means that the champion can emerge from any of the 3 divisions. However the overall winner does not qualify for any further recognition in his/her particular division. Furthermore, a participant may not compete in more than one division.

PRESIDENT SE VERSLAG OOR OPINIE OPNAME

1. Eurika Gowans trofee/vroue divisie;

2. Divisies in die algemeen;

3. Nasionale toernooi – Vlaghysing;

4. Nasional toernooi – Kleredrag (spelers);

5. Nasional toernooi – Kleredrag (geleenthede);

6. Nasional toernooi – Dinsdag prysuitdeeling;

8. Nasionale toernooi – Gala dinee;
